A popular public destination in Columbus, the Scioto Mile serves as a meeting place for thousands of residents and visitors. Stretching from the Arena District to Whittier Peninsula, the Scioto Mile Park and Promenade connects downtown Columbus life to the Scioto River banks. The landscaped park features fountains, sculptures and special lighting that can be choreographed to music via computer controls. A popular place for Columbus’ Red, White and Boom, outdoor concerts and festivals, the Scioto Mile has become one of SME’s most prized projects.
Aside from lighting and sound installations along the entire mile, SME installed two solar arrays on top of the main Scioto Mile building. Along with this new technology, SME included video surveillance, fire detection and alarm systems, low –voltage transformers, underground ductwork and enclosed switches, circuit breakers and controllers.
Paired with Messer Construction, SME worked closely with engineers to install the fountain’s complex electrical conduit and more than five miles of underground duct work and plumbing. This project is the largest public project in the state of Ohio that used BIM for underground modeling, which ensured that the 145 acre and $2.5 million project be completed ahead of schedule.
