After a lightning strike in 2009 left the plant with half of its electrical equipment unusable, SME was contracted to replace and make improvements to the plant’s electrical distribution system. This project included the installation of two new electrical poles, and the installation of a re-closer switch with remote operation capabilities. SME also removed and replaced all the hardware and cable associated with five other poles that distributed power to the system. Two new exterior utility yards were constructed with new pad mounted 15kv transformers and medium voltage disconnect switches. Inside the plant, two 1200 amp switchgear line-ups were installed and loads were moved to the new switch gear during a series of scheduled 4-hour overnight & weekend outages in order to maintain plant operation.
